Rational Asset Pricing Bubbles and Debt Constraints

چکیده

Rational price bubble arises when the price of an asset exceeds the asset’s fundamental value, that is, the present value of future dividend payments. The important result of Santos and Woodford (1997) says that price bubbles cannot exist in equilibrium in the standard dynamic asset pricing model with rational agents facing borrowing constraints as long as assets are in strictly positive supply and the present value of total future resources is finite. This paper explores the possibility of asset price bubbles under endogenous debt constraints induced by limited enforcement of debt repayment. Equilibria with endogenous debt constraints are prone to have infinite present value of total resources. We show that asset price bubble are likely to exist in such equilibria. Further, we demonstrate that there always exist equilibria with price bubbles on assets in zero supply. We discuss alternative concepts of price bubbles including the speculative bubble. Rational Equity Bubbles

People use to believe that no bubble can exist in an infinite-horizon model with a finite number of rational individuals. However, the opinion is true only for the baseline case. In the baseline model, wealth merely provides consumption flows, which individuals only care about. No one likes to hold an asset, whose price is above its fundamental value, forever. Sooner or later, individuals will ...

Rational asset pricing bubbles and portfolio constraints

This article shows that portfolio constraints can give rise to rational asset pricing bubbles in equilibrium even if there are unconstrained agents in the economy who can benefit from the induced limited arbitrage opportunities. Furthermore, it is shown that bubbles can lead to both multiplicity and real indeterminacy of equilibria. The general results are illustrated by two explicitly solved e...

Rational Equilibrium Asset-Pricing Bubbles in Continuous Trading Models

We study rational equilibrium asset-pricing bubbles in an economic environment in which agents are allowed to trade continuously, including as special cases some models from financial economics. For positive net supply assets, we present new necessary and sufficient conditions for the absence of bubbles in complete and incomplete markets equilibria with several types of borrowing constraints. F...

Quiet bubbles

Classic speculative bubbles are loud – price is high and so are price volatility and share turnover. The credit bubble of 2003-2007 is quiet – price is high but price volatility and share turnover are low. We develop a model, based on investor disagreement and short-sales constraints, that explains why credit bubbles are quieter than equity ones. Since debt up-side payoffs are bounded, debt is ...

Towards a new model of speculative bubbles: nonparametric test with an application to the Tunisian Stock Index

Bubbles in asset prices have fascinated researchers in finance. Identify asset bubbles, by circumstances, on the stock market has been a growing number of research theoretical and empirical. On a theoretical level, it was assumed that the price dynamics reflect irrational behavior of economic agents and, therefore, should be excluded from a deal with the truly rational economic agents Burmeiste...
